Machining Large Aluminum Sheets: Best Practices

How we CNC machine large aluminum sheets on a 5 × 10 ft router: alloy choice, handling, machining parameters, fixturing and heat management.

CNC machining large aluminum sheets takes precision, experience and the right equipment. We use our 5 × 10 ft multi-tool CNC router for projects like architectural displays and industrial components. Here is what matters most.

Material selection

The alloy sets the strength and how well the part machines. 6061 and 7075 are popular for their strength and workability; your application decides which fits best.

Handling and loading

Large sheets need careful handling to avoid damage and keep everyone safe. We use lifting equipment to move them and make sure each sheet sits flat and secure on the router. Thin sheets can be held on a subplate with adhesive tape and glue.

Machining parameters

Spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut drive both productivity and surface finish. Aluminum conducts heat well, so coolant or lubricant keeps it dimensionally stable, and the right tools and toolpaths stop material from welding onto the cutter.

Fixturing and clamping

Vacuum tables, purpose-made clamps or adhesive fixtures keep a large sheet still. Good support reduces vibration and keeps the last part as accurate as the first.

Heat management

Mist or flood coolant prevents thermal distortion and extends tool life.
