FAQ

Questions we get asked.

Quotes, files, materials, tolerances, shipping and foam. Don't see yours? Call or email us.

Machined part clamped in a vise on the machining centre
Do you take one-off jobs and small quantities?

Yes. Prototypes, one-offs and small batches are most of what we do, and there's no minimum order. For larger runs we also produce through vetted local and offshore partners.

What files can I send for a quote?

STEP, IGES, DXF, DWG, STL and PDF drawings all work. A sketch with dimensions, a photo or the original part is fine too; we can turn it into a drawing.

How quickly will I get a quote?

Usually within 24 to 48 hours. Complex assemblies or jobs that need design work can take a little longer, and we'll tell you if so.

What tolerances can you hold?

Machined parts are held to ±0.005″ as standard, and tighter on suitable features on the 5-axis. Tell us which features matter and we'll confirm what's achievable.

What materials do you work with?

Aluminum, steel, stainless, brass and engineering plastics for machining; mild steel, stainless 304/316 and aluminum 5052/6061 for fabrication and welding; wood, plastics, composites, aluminum and EVA foam on the router; and acrylic, wood, leather, fabric and foam on the CO₂ laser.

Can you machine a part after it's welded?

Yes. Post-machining weldments is one of our specialties: we weld the frame or base, then machine the faces and bores true on the 5-axis.

Where are you, and which areas do you serve?

Our shop is at 142–11566 Eburne Way in Richmond, BC. We work with customers across Metro Vancouver (Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Delta, New Westminster, Coquitlam) and ship anywhere in Canada.

How do I order a custom foam insert?

Use the online insert designer: set your sheet, draw or trace your tools from a photo, and send it to us. You can also email your case model or a photo of your tools on paper.

Which foam do you use?

High-density, closed-cell EVA in 20 mm and 50 mm sheets: two-tone Black / Green and Black / Red for shadow boards, and Solid Black for case inserts and packaging.

Do you do finishing like powder coating and anodizing?

Yes. We manage powder coating, anodizing, polishing and passivation, and do deburring and surface prep in-house, so parts come back ready to install.

Can I visit the shop?

Yes, by appointment, for project discussions, material reviews or production updates. Call or email first.

Are you related to Spark Laser?

Yes. Spark Fabrication and Spark Laser Inc. are part of the same Spark family in Richmond, BC. Spark Laser designs and builds custom machines and laser automation; Spark Fabrication makes parts and fabrications for them and for outside customers.
